Hip hop music is a genre which developed primarily as a part of the Hip hop culture which propagated amongst the African Americans living in New York City and gradually spread to other black-dominated societies of the U.S. It mainly consists of an amalgamation of elements like Rapping, DJ’ing, Sampling and beat boxing. The other communities of the U.S became fonder of this genre with the passage of time and consequently the genre got influenced by rock music, reggae and electronic music which opened the floodgates for it. It spread around the world and soon evolved into one of the most commercially viable genres of music. Some of the most well-known artists of this genre are Public Enemy, GangStarr, Big Daddy Kane, Black star to name a few. During the advent of the 1990s, the genre of music became violent so as to portray the underground lifestyles of the black youths in the U.S. and it became popular as ‘Gangsta Rap’. This subgenre had explicit lyrics which depicted extreme violence, drug usage and sexual acts and it soon became the most commercially lucrative subgenre of hip hop. With the passage of time almost all the albums of this genre started to have a Parental Advisory warning from Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) marked on their covers. Some of the famous artists today include Eminem, Missy Elliot, Ludacris, LL Cool j, P. Diddy, etc.
